Governor Sisolak to Sign Senate Bill 340 into Law at SEIU Local 1107 Headquarters

Las Vegas, NV- Governor Sisolak will sign the Nevada Home Care Workforce Safety & Standards Act, SB340, sponsored by State Senator Dina Neal into Law alongside Service Employees International Union (SEIU) Local 1107 home care workers at SEIU Local 1107 headquarters.

Nevada has one of the fastest-growing senior populations in the nation. The need for high-quality home care services in the Silver State is skyrocketing, but too many of the state’s 13,000 homecare workers are underpaid and exploited— conditions that have only worsened during the COVID-19 pandemic. SB340 will create a Nevada Home Care Employment Standards Board made up of workers, consumers, employers, and state officials to recommend improvements based on investigation findings. The Board can examine and investigate pressing issues such as Medicaid reimbursement rates, safe and healthy working conditions for personal care aides, and recruitment and retention rates for the home care workforce. The passage of SB340 into Law will ensure the quality and safety of Nevada home care services will improve the lives of 13,000 workers and their families while maintaining the health and the independence of tens of thousands of consumers.

“SB340 is a major step toward solving the long-term care crisis in our state,” said Grace Vergara-Mactal, Executive Director of SEIU Nevada 1107, the state’s healthcare and public services union. “With this bill, Nevada is helping to lead the way toward addressing the ‘Silver Tsunami’ which is crashing over our country as the baby boomer generation ages. We’re saying the way you solve the crisis is by giving workers and consumers a voice and a real seat at the table. This victory shows the power of home care workers–who are predominantly women and people of color–when they unite, work collaboratively with community allies and speak directly with lawmakers. On behalf of all our members, we want to thank SB340’s sponsor, Senator Dina Neal, for introducing this historic bill, and Governor Sisolak for signing it into Law ensuring that home care workers in Nevada and the clients they care for will be treated with the dignity and compassion they deserve.”
